Why some industries are off-limits
Even if your business is fully legal in your country, Meta operates a global platform and applies the strictest set of restrictions across all markets. Some industries are banned from the API entirely, and any attempt to onboard them ends with rejection at the verification stage.
Strictly prohibited
Adult content and services, including dating apps that emphasise hookups, are not permitted. Weapons, ammunition and explosives are banned without exception. Recreational and prescription drugs cannot be sold or advertised through WhatsApp. Tobacco, vaping products and e-cigarettes are off the table. Multi-level marketing structures with deceptive earnings claims are also disallowed.
Heavily restricted
Online gambling, real-money gaming and lottery services are restricted to a handful of regulated markets and require explicit Meta approval. Cryptocurrency exchanges and trading platforms face heavy scrutiny and are banned from advertising in many regions. High-cost short-term lending, often called payday loans, is restricted or prohibited depending on the jurisdiction. Get-rich-quick schemes and unverified investment opportunities are banned.
Allowed but watched closely
Some industries are allowed but face stricter content review. Alcohol can be sold in approved markets with age gating. Pharmacies can communicate about prescriptions but cannot advertise medication. Healthcare providers must avoid making medical guarantees. Financial services must hold the proper local licences and disclose risks.
What rejection looks like
If your industry is on the prohibited list, your WhatsApp Business Account application will be rejected during onboarding and you cannot reapply by changing the business description. Meta cross-references your registered business activity with your website and public records. Misrepresenting your industry to gain access is a violation that leads to permanent ban.
Workarounds that do not work
Some entrepreneurs try to use a sister company in an allowed industry to message customers from a banned one. This is a clear policy violation and is detected easily once messages start flowing. The same applies to using a personal WhatsApp account at scale to dodge the API restrictions.
If you are unsure
Reach out to a reputable BSP before signing up. They review hundreds of applications a month and can tell you within minutes whether your business will be approved. It is far cheaper to get a clear no upfront than to invest in chatbot development for an account that will be banned at launch.
