Getting the Green Tick on WhatsApp: How Business Verification Actually Works

What the green tick really means

The green checkmark next to a WhatsApp business name means Meta has independently verified that the account belongs to a notable, authentic brand. It is not awarded for paying money, having lots of customers, or being on the API. It is a trust signal that helps customers know they are chatting with the real Nike, Standard Bank or Takealot rather than an impostor.

Who qualifies

Meta uses the same notability standard as Facebook and Instagram verification. Your brand needs to have meaningful press coverage in independent, third-party publications, a clear public presence, and an established footprint. Small local businesses, even successful ones, almost never qualify. National brands, public figures, large nonprofits and well-known online stores have a realistic shot.

Prerequisites

You must be on the WhatsApp Business Platform (API) through an official Business Solution Provider, have a verified Meta Business Account, and have your display name approved. The free WhatsApp Business app cannot get the green tick under any circumstances, no matter how big your business is.

How to apply

Verification is requested through your BSP or directly inside Meta Business Manager once you have an active WABA. You submit your legal business name, supporting evidence such as press articles, and your website. Meta reviews the submission internally and the decision is final, with no published appeal process.

Why most applications fail

The single biggest reason for rejection is insufficient notability. A blog post on your own website does not count. Paid press releases do not count. You need genuine editorial coverage in mainstream outlets. The second most common reason is mismatched information between your WABA, your website and your supporting documents.

Alternatives if you do not qualify

The grey checkmark, called Official Business Account status, is far more attainable. It indicates that the business has been confirmed but not deemed notable enough for the green tick. Most reputable companies on the API receive it within their first few months and customers still see a clear trust signal.

After approval

The green tick is tied to your phone number and display name. If you change either, you may lose verification and have to reapply. Treat it as a privilege to maintain rather than a one-time achievement.
